Content

This portrayal is of Salman Rushdie; a critically acclaimed cause. The portrait was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery and intended to be a established piece to be kept for posterity and to be displayed to the public.
Khakhar was a friend of Rushdie and, although the subject has been observed directly from life, it does not glamourize Rushdies appearance, but uses the influence of pop art and draws on traditional forms of Indian and western art to create a image that captures Rushdies status and importance.

Khakhar chose to position Rushdie in the stub of the painting surrounded by scenes from his novel, The Moors cobblers last Sigh, rather than illustrating Rushdie naturally, in a traditional and realistic environment.



By using these creative, imaginative symbols and metaphors, Khakhar was trying to illustrate the power that Rushdies words and imagination can have in the introduction of literature.

Form

The painting is 1219mm x 1219mm. It is neither very large nor small. The subject, Salman Rushdie, is visualized in the centre of the painting surrounded by scenes from his novel, The Moors Last Sigh.

The fictional images arranged around the profound character of Rushdie are related through the work of the author rather than through any similarity in play or form. The colour is harmonious and soothing.
