Machiavellis, The Prince, is his guide to how a prince should literally live his life quite of theoretically living his life. Every decision should be based on how it will affect the whole community. Chapter 16 shows how if you are too generous then it will be the downfall to your kingdom. The funds it takes to be generous will flatus to high taxes for the people of your community.
This leads to whether it is better to be love or feared.
While in a perfect world a leader would be both feared and loved, that is not practical. Machiavelli states that it is better to be feared because people respect someone they fear. If you are just loved others will take advantage of you. Although fear is good to shake off over people, you dont want them to hate you either.
